    The True Stella Awards
    Definately NOT the Stella Awards
... The Stella Awards newsletter is free, and VERY interesting. The Stella Awards, named in honor of 81 year-old Stella Liebeck, the woman who sued McDonald's and won $2.9 million for spilling a cup of McDonald's coffee on herself. This column by Randy Cassingham (author of This is True - a wonderful and hilarious colletion of strange but true stories), which reviews and exposes the kind of lawsuits that stem from the American tendency to believe that we are never at fault for anything that happens to us. Most of the country has heard of the Darwin Awards given annually to the individuals who do the most for mankind by removing themselves from the gene pool. Now, we have the Stella Awards given to the individuals who win the most frivolous lawsuits ever. Ever since the New Mexico jury awarded Stella $2.9 million in damages the name "Stella Award" has been applied to any wild, outrageous, or ridiculous lawsuits -- including bogus cases! Stella Awards is a project of This is True® -- a weekly news commentary column featuring bizarre-but-true stories from newspapers all over the world, all with snippy commentary by Colorado humorist (and Society of Professional Journalists professional member) Randy Cassingham. If you like the Stella Awards, you'll love the weird-but-true stories sent out once each week in This is True.

... Trend Micro's free on-line virus scanner will scan all of your hard drives, including network drives. It works very well, and has discovered viruses that Norton Anti Virus has missed. If it detects one on your computer, it will provide you with options of removing it. The HouseCall Virus check-Up is a site that uses what some would call a security hole to scan your hard drive via the Internet. However, if your anti-virus software is not up to date, and you suspect your computer is infected with something, this may be a reasonable approach to diagnostics. But remember, they can see EVERYTHING.... You must have Windows 95 and above and Internet Explorer 4 and above. Sorry, it will not work on Macintosh and Netscape browsers.

    Spyware/Adware

... Spyware is programs that have the ability to scan systems or monitor activity and relay information to other computers or locations in cyber-space. Among the information that may be actively or passively gathered and disseminated by Spyware: passwords, log-in details, account numbers, personal information, individual files or other personal documents. Spyware may also gather and distribute information related to the user's computer, applications running on the computer, Internet browser usage or other computing habits.

Spyware frequently attempts to remain unnoticed, either by actively hiding or by simply not making its presence on a system known to the user. Spyware can be downloaded from Web sites (typically in shareware or freeware), email messages, and instant messengers. Additionally, a user may unknowingly receive and/or trigger spyware by accepting an End User License Agreement from a software program linked to the spyware or from visiting a website that downloads the spyware with or without an End User License Agreement.

Spyware is programs that facilitate delivery of advertising content to the user through their own window, or by utilizing another program's interface. In some cases, these programs may gather information from the user's computer, including information related to Internet browser usage or other computing habits, and relay this information back to a remote computer or other location in cyber-space.

... Adware can be downloaded from Web sites (typically in shareware or freeware), email messages, and instant messengers. Additionally, a user may unknowingly receive and/or trigger adware by accepting an End User License Agreement from a software program linked to the adware or from visiting a website that downloads the adware with or without an End User License Agreement.

    ... Phishing and Pharming
Both pharming and phishing are methods used to steal personal information from unsuspecting people over the Internet.

Phishing typically involves fraudulent bulk e-mail messages that guide recipients to legitimate-looking but fake Web sites and try to get them to supply personal information like account passwords.

Phishing attacks uses both social engineering and technical subterfuge to steal consumers' personal identity data and financial account credentials. Social-engineering schemes use 'spoofed' e- mails to lead consumers to counterfeit websites designed to trick recipients into divulging financial data such as credit card numbers, account usernames, passwords and social security numbers. Hijacking brand names of banks, e-retailers and credit card companies, phishers often convince recipients to respond. Technical subterfuge schemes plant crimeware onto PCs to steal credentials directly, often using Trojan keylogger spyware.

Pharming (crimeware) tampers with the domain-name server system (DNS hijacking or poisoning) so that traffic to a Web site is secretly redirected (misdirected) to a different site altogether (fraudulent sites or proxy servers), even though the browser seems to be displaying the Web address you wanted to visit.

To help avoid pharming, make sure the Web site has a valid certificate of authority, from a service like VeriSign, that matches the site's name before you enter any personal data.
