The Navy News Service (NAVNEWS) is the official news service of the Department of the Navy of the United States of America. NAVNEWS contains official news and information about fleet operations and exercises, personnel policies, budget actions, and more. This is the same news service which is distributed through Navy circuits to ships at sea and to shore commands around the world. NAVNEWS is produced in Washington by the Navy Office of Information and the Publishing Division of the Naval Media Center. -USN- 2. In what editions is NAVNEWS published? On what schedule? NAVNEWS is published in straight ascii text and in desktop-published formats. The text edition is best for on-screen reading, browsing or searching. Because it is ordinary ascii text, it may be downloaded and then retrieved into virtually any word processor for use in local Plans of the Day, base newspapers, command newsletters or other local publications. The text edition is published weekly, typically on Wednesday evenings, with occasional special issues. The desktop edition is fully produced and ready for downloading and printing. This edition is intended to be downloaded and printed intact, thus providing smaller commands with a ready-made Navy news service in an attractive, readable format. The desktop edition is published weekly, typically on Thursday afternoons. The text edition is the only one distributed by electronic mail. The desktop edition is available through the World Wide Web or through SALTS. See paragraph 4. -USN- 3. How do I subscribe to NAVNEWS by electronic mail? How do I unsubscribe? Change my address? Get help? An automated system handles routine subscription transactions, sends confirmations, and responds to most help requests. Messages which cannot be processed automatically are forwarded to a real human being for resolution. To subscribe to NAVNEWS by email, send an email message to navynews-request@mediacen.navy.mil with the single word subscribe in the subject line. The text area of your message must be left blank. To unsubscribe to NAVNEWS by email, send an email message to navynews-request@mediacen.navy.mil with the single word unsubscribe in the subject line. The text area of your message must be left blank. To change your address, first unsubscribe from your old address and then subscribe from your new address. To get help with NAVNEWS by email, send an email message to navynews-request@mediacen.navy.mil with the single word help in the subject line. The text area of your message must be left blank. To get the attention of a human being, send an ordinary email message to navynews-request@mediacen.navy.mil. An easy and effective way to do this is to reply to any of the automated messages. Please note that all email messages concerning distribution of NAVNEWS should be sent to navynews-request@mediacen.navy.mil. Please do not send distribution-related email to the editor's address. -USN- 4. How else is NAVNEWS distributed? NAVNEWS is available electronically by Naval message, SALTS, USENET, the World Wide Web (WWW), Gopher, telnet, a wide variety of local relays, and through several commercial online services. Some of these systems provide access to the desktop editions as well as the text editions. Some provide easy access to back issues. A variety of search and retrieval schemes are used. Information about these various access methods is contained in a separate file, which is available through the Navy Web Site http://www.chinfo.navy.mil/navpalib/news/navnews/Nnsinfo.txt . -USN- 5. How do I send feedback to NAVNEWS?
